The Protec system was used to waterproof the domed green roof areas of this sustainable house development on Grand Designs, Channel 4 November 4th 2010.

With an ambitious vision and a tight budget, Robert and Milla Gaukroger set about transforming an unattractive 1980’s house overlooking Lake Windermere into a state-of-the-art sustainable home.

In order to blend into the hillside setting, the domed roofs of the house were to be covered with a green roof . The Protec System was chosen as to waterproof the roof and provide a base for the green roof. Lightweight, flexible and highly durable, the system can easily accommodate structural expansion movements and is tough enough to resist root penetration.

The Protec system was applied to over 350m2 of domed roof to provide a long lasting waterproofing membrane. Guaranteed for 20 years and carrying BBA approval, Mr & Mrs Gaukroger had complete peace of mind that their roofs would remain waterproof for years to come.

Mr & Mrs Thomas were building their new home and were keen on a lead finish for the roof over the porch and garage areas. Having received a quotation for a lead roof that was far too expensive they began to look for alternatives.

Mr & Mrs Thomas contacted their local Polyroof approved contractor to discuss lead replica finishes and a price for the works. The contractor put forward the Protec system for the roof which was at a fraction of the price of lead.

The Protec system was applied to structural plywood which incorporated lead roll GRP trims to create the authentic lead-look. The complete system was applied within a day and quickly cured to form a seamless waterproofing membrane, allowing other work to continue on the house without disruption.

Like all Polyroof systems, Protec is cold-applied which eliminates the risk of fire and damage that is associated with the burners used to install real lead. Furthermore there is no scrap value to Polyroof lead replica finishes and therefore your roof will not be at risk of vandalism and theft.

Mr & Mrs Jones had a flat roof above their garage that had been leaking for a long period of time. The flat roof had failed and was in urgent need of replacement. With a tight budget and needing the roof to be leak-free for as long as possible, a cost effective and long term solution was required.

The Solution

After spending time looking at the other options available, Mr & Mrs Jones decided that the Polyroof range of flat roofing systems was the best way to solve the problem. A local Polyroof approved contractor removed the failing roof and installed a new plywood deck to provide a sound structure for the new roof. The Polyroof 185 System was then installed in the client’s choice of colour and, carrying a 20 year insurance backed guarantee and BBA approval, gave the client complete peace of mind.

A recently broadcast episode involved an £80,000 extension with a balcony above the new living accommodation. The work, carried out by a local builder in Plymouth, was not just poor workmanship but was dangerous. For one thing they had tacked ordinary roofing felt to the balcony which had started leaking onto the electrics of the rooms below. Approved Polyroof contractors SMA Roofing were contacted to properly waterproof and repair the balcony roof and apply an anti-slip balcony finish. Anthony Ridolpho and his team re-decked the roof with exterior grade plywood onto which they applied Polyroof 185 cold applied seamless GRP system with its BBA approved anti-slip finish. The system carries a 20 year insurance-backed guarantee for complete peace of mind. Labour and materials were supplied free of charge. Although a lot of other work was carried out at the property, the homeowners David and Lara Rosencroft were especially pleased with the balcony where they can now enjoy the delightful views over their large garden. The show was broadcast on January 22nd with good coverage being given to the balcony restoration.
